Welcome to Behind the Brush… I’m so happy you’re here. Artist Focus is my mid-month feature where I invite botanical artists from all over the world to share their favourite seven studio picks for plant art and beyond.
Jarnie is a self-taught botanical artist. Born in London, she has been a teacher, a graphic designer, and received a formal training in architecture. In her work, Jarnie focuses on her love of structure and vibrancy, with subjects often depicted at larger than life size. Her work is held in a number of private and public collections, including the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation.
In 2021 Jarnie was awarded a RHS Silver-Gilt medal. In 2023 her first book ‘Vibrant Botanical Painting’ was published by The Crowood Press. This year Jarnie will once again be exhibiting with the RHS at their annual Botanical Art & Photography Show held at the Saatchi Gallery, London. Meet Jarnie…
Favourite Paintbrush?
Right now I’m using Winsor & Newton’s Series 7 miniatures in sizes 0 and 1. For big washes I use larger, cheaper brushes.
Favourite Paint?
I always have Schmincke Transparent Yellow on the palette, and a few Daniel Smith and M. Graham colours, while everything else is Winsor & Newton.
Favourite watercolour paper?
I have tried most brands to find the one which suits my style of painting. Now I love to use Arches, but will happily paint on anything.
Favourite botanical artist?
When I started botanical painting I fell in love with the work of Rosie Sanders. Her work is incredible, and continues to inspire.
Favourite plant to paint?
It’s hard to choose between my big three favourites. I love structure and vibrancy, so it has to be peonies, roses and iris.
Favourite studio drink?
In the studio I generally just keep a bottle of water (in case of spills). During a break, I switch between a good Earl Grey tea, a hot chocolate for cosiness or my new wellness favourite Golden Milk.
Favourite studio music/pods?
There’s always music, and I do love a podcast. Ladykillers with historian Lucy Worsley is worth a listen, Dish with Angela Hartnett for foodie fun, and How to Fail with Elizabeth Day. Or, just a good audio book.
Have a lovely weekend,
Emma x
